Who are the Most Highly Regarded Artists and What Are Their Most Highly-Regarded Works of Art? If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, then this is the list for you. In the list below, I have arranged my ‘Best Works of Art’ list by artist, in alphabetical order. (As you may recall, the “Best Works of Art” and “Art History 101” lists were created by compiling 18 or so ‘Best Works of Art of All Time’ lists into one gigantic meta-list of all the artworks that were mentioned on at least two of the 18 original lists.) For obvious reasons, I have not included works where the artist is anonymous, not named or otherwise unknown.
For each artist, I have provided name(s), birth and death dates, if available, and country of origin. Where an artist spent most or all of his productive years in another country, I have listed that country also. I have included public domain or fair use images of many of the artists – these images include a mix of self-portraits, portraits of one artist by another, and, for 19th and 20th century artists, photographs. An (S) symbol indicates that the work of art is a sculpture; most of the remaining works are paintings. The number in parentheses after each work indicates how many of the 18 ‘Best Works of Art’ lists include that particular artwork.
In alphabetizing the names of the older artists, I found a wide variety of practices (for example, I’ve seen Leonardo da Vinci filed under “L”, “D”, and “V”). I tried to find the most common practice or the practice used by the most authoritative sources (art history textbooks and museum websites rated the highest). When that didn’t work, I alphabetized based on what made the most sense to me. So, for example, even though two authoritative sources told me to file Vincent Van Gogh under “G”, I put him under “V” where my common sense told me to.
