I collected over 18 lists of the best operas of all time from the Internet and books and combined them into one list.  The results are below, arranged by composer in order of the composer’s date of birth.  This list includes every opera on at least two of the original source lists (the number of lists is also included).     Thanks for adding the number of lists each opera is on. That’s really very helpful. You’re right, the chonological order is very interesting also. So now you’ve give us the best of all worlds. I’ve started going through the list systematically to enjoy works that I have never or rarely heard. When I do choose to know an opera, I listen to it over and over again until it is quite familiar, so it’s going to take me awhile. I’m finding Youtube to be an unexpectedly rich source of performances. I thought I’d have to be going to Live at the Met more. Perhaps you would consider makeing a list of all the best opera performances on YouTube, and annotating them on your opera list here. (I’m sure that just what you needed, a new list project.) Thank you again.
