The Best Photographers and their Best Photos

As the first step in creating this list of the best photographers and their best photographs, I collected numerous lists of the “Best Photographers of All Time” and combined them into one large meta-list. To see which photographers were on the most lists, go here. I then added all the photographers with photographs in the “Best Photography of All Time” lists who weren’t on the “Best Photographers” meta-list, along with the photographs associated with them. I then searched for the best photographs for each photographer on the “best photographers” meta-list by identifying the photographer’s most-frequently mentioned or reprinted photos. To accompany the listings for almost all of the photographers, I chose a photograph (in one case, a painting) of the photographer, often a self-portrait or a photograph showing the photographer at work. The photographers are listed in chronological order by date of birth and are not ranked. To see many of the photographs listed below, go to:
