Best Athletes – By Sport

I collected some “Best Athletes of All Time” lists off the Internet and combined them into one list.  Because I only found a few such lists, I supplemented with sport-specific “Best Athletes” lists.  First, I organized the results by rank, that is, by the number of lists the athlete was on.  To see the list, go here.  Michael Jordan was on 33 of the lists I found, giving him the Number 1 spot.  The list below is organized by sport and within each sport by rank (the number of lists the athlete was on is in parentheses), and within rank by date of birth.  Where men and women both compete in the sport, but compete separately, I have separated the men and women.  Both meta-lists include athletes who were on at least three of the original source lists.

* Note re: Lance Armstrong: None of the “best athletes” lists made after 2013 include Lance Armstrong’s name, which is likely a result of the revelations that he used banned performance-enhancing drugs.  Because his name is on eight lists made before that date and those lists are included in the meta-list, I have decided to continue to include him.

you’ve still got lance armstrong on here, should you take him off? I know it might be outside the list results so worth redoing the lists?

Tom: It’s an excellent question. There is quite a bit of debate on this point, not just for Armstrong but for other athletes who took performance-enhancing drugs (particularly in baseball: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, etc). Some argue that they were living in an era when doping was ignored or not taken as seriously and so should not be penalized retroactively. Others say that they broke the rules and didn’t play fair, and shouldn’t get credit for their drug-enhanced achievements. Let me look into it a bit more. If the latter view prevails, then the “best athletes” of all time lists should tell us the answer. It’s probably time to scour the Internet for more of those lists and add them to my meta-list, which hasn’t been updated in quite a while. Thanks for raising the issue.
